Groups
Brackets are used to denote a group and/or a category (a category is
a group of items within a concept).

Categories
A category is regarded as a group, and so will use the group element.
Some things will always appear as a group, but others may be used in
either form for visual simplicity when appropriate. For example a commonly
used word such as 'animals' might be used without brackets in general
use, but when used in a categorising sense then it will have the brackets
(see also school subjects). But 'Fat' would normally carry the group
symbol so that it is not confused with these specific foods, as it would
be less likely to be learned as an exception.
