Plurals

There has been a lot of inconsistency in the illustration of plurals. Some irregular nouns have had their own symbols (e. g. mice) but others have not. There has been a plural qualifier available for some time, but it has not been greatly used. The use of the letter 's' has been rejected on two counts: we are trying to make an international symbol set and so letters are inappropriate. Also the addition of the letter 's' would be confusing in the case of irregular nouns such as mice. There are three solutions offered:

1. For common nouns a combined graphic will be created for the level 1 vocabulary. They will be made using the resource Manager, so it will be straightforward to create additional ones. This will only be appropriate to images that are simple. It will be inappropriate to make multiple representations using items that are visually complex.

2. The use of a qualifier. This will be used in the higher levels of vocabulary for all plurals.

3. For symbols representing plurals of people the addition of a plural qualifier is confusing when added to the person's own qualifiers (e.g. plumbers) and so a plural for people will be made by adding two more people to the singular symbol.
